Aid and Attendance is a benefit that’s paid by VA to veterans and veteran spouses. It’s paid in addition to the basic pension of a veteran for those that qualify. Aid and Attendance is for people who need financial help for home care, nursing home, or assistance with daily living.

This Veteran’s program is a great source of funds for wartime Veterans and/or their spouses who are financially constrained. However, there are misperceptions and conflicts associated with the VA Aid and Attendance program, so you must understand what the benefits are, as well as to inform yourself about the details behind the process for Qualifying for Aid and Attendance.

Home Care Services for Veterans

If you are able to qualify for Aid and Attendance, the pension benefit can help pay for custodial care at home.  This will allow the Veteran and/or spouse to age in place versus moving to an assisted living facility.  A home care professional such as a home health aide or certified nursing assistance are licensed health care professionals that are licensed to provide personal care.

Understanding Aid and Attendance Benefits Veterans Home Care Assistance Program

A wartime Veteran or spouse can qualify for Aid and Attendance monthly pension benefit if the Veteran has served 90 days active military service, one day beginning or ending during a war period.

Vets and spouses may be entitled for Aid and Attendance when:

  • They require the help of another person to perform everyday personal functions, like bathing, dressing, feeding, adjusting prosthetic devices, protecting themselves from the hazard of their daily environment, etc.;
  • They are bedridden, and their disabilities require that they remain in bed apart from any treatment;
  • They are a patient in a hospital or nursing home due to physical or mental incapacity;
  • They are blind/nearly blind and have 5/200 or less corrected visual acuity, as well as concentric contraction of the visual field to five degrees or less.

How to apply for VA Aid and Attendance?

You can apply for VA Aid and Attendance by writing to the VA regional office and file a claim for a pension benefit. You should include a report from your physician that validates the need for Aid and Attendance care. The report must be in sufficient detail in order to determine if there is loss of coordination, injury or disease that produces mental or physical impairment, or a condition that affects your ability to perform your everyday activities.

In addition to the basic forms, the applicant must have the following documents:

  • Asset information
  • Marriage certificate / death certificate
  • Verification of income
  • Voided check for Aid and Attendance direct deposit
  • Proof of medical premiums.
