Memory Loss Movie – Iris is based on a true story and is a great movie involving memory loss.
Memory Loss Movie and Author
The movie is about Iris Murdoch, a famous author. The movie cuts between her past as a young woman (played by Kate Winslet) and Iris as an older woman (played by Judi Dench). The movie spans a large portion of Iris’s life, including how she met her husband and how she lives another life through her writing.
While you see Iris’s life become more confusing because of memory loss, it shows the struggles that her husband goes through as he tries to care for her and with friends and doctors. His struggles are an accurate depiction of what loved ones go through when caring for someone with memory loss because sometimes the caregivers are the only ones left with hope – not for a cure but for happiness.
While nothing about memory loss is happy, I loved the fact that the movie was not a “pity-party” and didn’t dwell too much on sadness. The cuts through Iris’s past and present help break up the progression of the disease, but there was still love from friends and the memories they shared in the past.
I was effected a lot by Anne Basting’s book, Forget Memory (I wrote 3 blogs about it). In it, she refers to this movie, but discusses how popular culture has created a cloud around the idea of memory loss and therefore a fear surrounding it as well.
This movie addresses those fears, but because it was a popular movie, it exposes those fears. While the movie was no Forrest Gump, I am sure those that saw it were affected and I hope that they saw beyond the fear and unknown of memory loss and realized that love is a language all on its own, no matter what is happening in our world.
