Aging Parent Painful Knees
There are distinct difference between men and women when it comes to painful knees. The physicians at Palm Beach Orthopaedic Institute (PBOI) have the experience and understanding of anatomy differences between men and women relating to knee pain and arthritis. Knee arthritis is a gradual loss of the smooth tissue (cartilage) that lines the knee joint and eventually causes pain, loss of motion, and abnormal alignment of the knee joint.
Knee arthritis continues to be a growing epidemic in our patient population at PBOI. The baby boomer generation is more active than their parents or grandparents so an increase in demands for knee replacement has risen at a younger age. Total or partial knee replacements are one of the fastest growing surgical interventions in the United States. More than 600,000 total knee replacements are performed each year.
Data shows that women often wait longer, or go without knee replacement compared to men with knee arthritis. Even so, research studies show that women are the recipients of 2 out of 3 of the total knee replacements performed in the United States. One study showed that while the degree of underuse for joint replacement was found in both sexes, underuse was found three times greater in women than in men. This shows that increasing pain and loss of movement is occurring before treatment is started which can create other medical issues including weight gain, and in turn could prevent future replacement.
Anatomy differences between men and women are common. Women tend to be prone to being knock-kneed because they have more width and thickness to their knees. On the other hand, men are more prone to being bow-legged. These are just a few examples of the differences between men and women and how the physician’s experience in addressing the issues helps to maintain a good alignment and outcome of knee partial and total replacements.
