Distance Caregiving – Part 3

Distance Caregiving – D artfully shares some of their daughters’ financial stresses- including her own due to the housing market where she’d devoted 20 years of her career. It was becoming more difficult for us to help them out financially as we had been.

Quality of Elders Life

We told our parents we’d found a solution that would give them an exceptional quality of life. They wouldn’t have the worries they’d experienced the past year and would once more have some discretionary income with which to have fun. They could enjoy life again!

D described their current financial situation, value of the home, debts, their income, etc. The solution is the perfect place we found for both of you to live that fulfills all those questions we asked you. We explained that their daughters had spent months working on a solution and had gathered in Chicago last weekend to tour the five facilities I’d recommended.

We showed my parents the brochure of the retirement and assisted living community we’d chosen. It had a tropical feel and was very attractive. We showed them the floor plan of their apartment and went into the features and benefits of the facility. D explained how the sale of their home would create a trust from which the rent would be paid each month all the while earning interest. All of their expenses related to “room and board” were included in the monthly rental. Additional home care like medication management & whatever else they needed as time went on could be added to the rent like a cafeteria plan.

We explained why Illinois was the best choice. With three daughters living in that area and me an hour’s flight away, they would be able to spend more time with their family. (My Dad worked for a major airline all his life so he & Mom enjoyed air travel. However, the enjoyment of flying had been seriously hindered by security concerns. Long walks carting luggage through airport corridors had become much more challenging for my parents.) Their daughters didn’t get to see as much of them as we’d like because they didn’t fly as often anymore

Dad looked pretty hopeful while Mom looked worried. D & I went on.
