Q: Does Medicare Pay for Assisted Living?

A: No, Medicare does NOT pay for care or rent at an assisted living facility.   Medicare does pay for home health services only short term intermittent care if the resident is under a care of a doctor for skilled home care services.  Example of skilled home care services covered by Medicare are a visiting nurse to monitor medication and/or wound care, physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy.

Q: After a recent hospitalization will my aging parent qualify for short term rehabilitation at a facility under Medicare?

A: A candidate for short term rehabilitation has to qualify under Medicare.

Caregivers should be proactive by asking the following questions:

  • Is Mom/Dad admitted at the hospital or under observation?
  • What tests are the doctors performing in order to warrant Mom/Dad being admitted?
  • What is the expected discharge date?
  • Who is recommending short term nursing and rehab, the hospitalist or my Mom’s/Dad’s primary care physician?

These questions are important to get answered as it will help you properly plan whether Mom/Dad health care setback is short term or long term.

Senior Living Care Options

Here are some helpful terms and payment options should you be faced with the challange of locating a senior care facility for a loved one or for yourself.

Care Level Options:

Independent Living Rental Apartments – private pay monthly rentals available. Retirement communities  provide no care options through their organization unless the community has a licensed senior care provider collaborating with their residents for private care services independently.  Some senior living communities have a resident coordinator/property manager that can be available for a resident to get senior care services.

Assisted Living Facilities – These are licensed care communities that are state regulated and provide care in a home environment.  Residents can receive Medicare Home Health through their own insurance for short term intermittent skilled care like visiting nursing or home physical therapy.   Generally assisted living faciilties will have a monthly rental rate and additional care services are offered monthly based on assessement by the clinical assisted living director.
