I’m considering relocating my grandfather from New York to Florida. He is currently at a hospital in Long Island. My husband and I are going back and forth considering whether he should go back to his apartment or we move him to South Florida to be near us. I’m looking for honest feedback not sure if I have alot of options.
Joel, when looking into getting an assessment for a residential care home or assisted living community, try to pin down first whether or not your grandfather has the ability to self transfer. Every state is different but the ability to transfer himself without assistance can make the difference whether or not he will be accepted into an assisted living community or a nursing home. He cannot be bed bound for example. Patient must not require 24 hour self care.
Overall, the assessment will help determine whether or not the assisted living community can meet the need of the future resident as their license may have limitations based on the state and their requirements. Good luck!
Hi Joel! I’m working on considering assisted living for an aging parent myself and perhaps a nursing home as well. What I do know is that assisted living facilities and nursing homes can come meet patients while they are at the hospital. There is no cost. I would suggest speaking with the doctor about having an assessment.
