The housing market isn’t a good place for anyone to be right now. That’s why LeCesse Development Corp. had to think of something to do with its $300,000 Villa Grande condos in Sarasota, Florida.

LeCesse Development Corp. decided to cater to the growing population of baby boomers and is making Villa Grande rental apartments for people over 62. They are also not charging an entry fee, which is very common in many continuing care retirement communities (CCRCs). To offset the price, health care will not be available on site, but many seniors have insurance that covers what they need.

I think this is a great option for many seniors. Villa Grande offers more independence from nursing homes or CCRCs. It meets the needs of seniors, but residents still need to be self-reliant. It’s a great happy-medium between being dependent on staff for most tasks and living alone without help.

Some great perks of Villa Grande are:

  • Swimming pool
  • Fitness center with full-time director on staff
  • Full spa
  • Beauty salon
  • No entrance fee
  • Near golf course and shopping
  • 900 square-feet one-bedroom apartments
  • 1,600 square-feet two-bedroom, two-bathroom apartments
  • Resident camaraderie with other similarly-aged people
  • Continental breakfast served daily
  • Transportation available to residents
  • 8,000 square foot club house

It will be more expensive to rent than a similarly-sized apartment (about $1,800 to $2,400 per month), but the perks that come along with living at Villa Grande are well worth it.

Villa Grande is expected to be open next summer.

I just read about a federally-funded program that will begin in 2012 that working adults can sign up for that will help them stay in their homes if they are disabled. It’s called CLASS, or Community Living Assistance Services and Support Act, and “will take only the approval of the patient’s own doctor to get most claims approved.”

There is so much frustration that comes with getting money from insurance companies as we age. There are a ton of loopholes and papers and waiting on the phone just to get information which sometimes leads to a denial letter. Insurance companies have been known to take advantage of seniors in this position.

CLASS was created to prevent all that from happening. The National Counsil on Aging said that about 10 million Americans need some sort of long-term assistance to help them with day-to-day functions. The benefits of CLASS address that growing number.

It is said that premiums will be between $50 and $75 per month, but they could go up if not enough people sign up for CLASS. So don’t forget! Mark your calendar and keep CLASS in mind!

45 year-old Jay Shafer was a grocery store clerk and decided to do something else. So he designed and built a tiny, 89 square-foot house. He had no building experience and just figured it out as he went.

His completed house is named Tumbleweed and is 1/10 the size of the average american home.

Growing up, Shafer complained about helping out with mortgage payments and felt that the large house he lived in with his family just made them feel like they needed to fill it up with more stuff and was actually just a burden.

The house soon became popular and it started his career to build more small houses, Tumbleweed Tiny House Company.

“Jay’s Small Homes have a great style,” Trathen Heckman said. Heckman has been in sustainability education for 10 years. “They feel more spacious than they are.”

Shafer believes that using only what he needs has been a wonderful transformation for him and has inspired others to do the same. He said that the advantages to small living are:

-No mortgage or rent
-Less than $100 a year for utilities
-More time spent outdoors
-Prevents waste

It’s easy to get caught up in the rat-race while trying to prove status in America. A big house means that you have more money, which is important in America. But what’s more important is taking a step back and realizing that really, it’s all just stuff. Once you put your ego aside, you can save more money being happy with the things you need and not having the stress of needing to have a higher status than your neighbors.

iRobot Corporation has plans to make senior living at home a much easier task.

Colin Angle, co-founder and CEO of iRobot, is concerned with the growing population of seniors and the lower number of caretakers for these seniors in the future. Concerned with his own mother’s safety, Angle says, “Why not create a robot buddy in the home that you can call and activate, and it can drive around the home and make sure that she’s not fallen down the stairs.”

iRobot’s machines are designed to make people’s lives easier. They have machines that clean and protect and the company continues to grow as more needs are apparent.

Angle also mentioned a program called CLASS (Community Living Assistance Services and Supports Act) through healthcare reform. The program will assist people living at home instead of moving to an assisted living community so they can keep their independence for a longer amount of time. Angle feels that iRobot’s machines will work with this program and will enrich people’s lives.
