I just read about a federally-funded program that will begin in 2012 that working adults can sign up for that will help them stay in their homes if they are disabled. It’s called CLASS, or Community Living Assistance Services and Support Act, and “will take only the approval of the patient’s own doctor to get most claims approved.”

There is so much frustration that comes with getting money from insurance companies as we age. There are a ton of loopholes and papers and waiting on the phone just to get information which sometimes leads to a denial letter. Insurance companies have been known to take advantage of seniors in this position.

CLASS was created to prevent all that from happening. The National Counsil on Aging said that about 10 million Americans need some sort of long-term assistance to help them with day-to-day functions. The benefits of CLASS address that growing number.

It is said that premiums will be between $50 and $75 per month, but they could go up if not enough people sign up for CLASS. So don’t forget! Mark your calendar and keep CLASS in mind!

iRobot Corporation has plans to make senior living at home a much easier task.

Colin Angle, co-founder and CEO of iRobot, is concerned with the growing population of seniors and the lower number of caretakers for these seniors in the future. Concerned with his own mother’s safety, Angle says, “Why not create a robot buddy in the home that you can call and activate, and it can drive around the home and make sure that she’s not fallen down the stairs.”

iRobot’s machines are designed to make people’s lives easier. They have machines that clean and protect and the company continues to grow as more needs are apparent.

Angle also mentioned a program called CLASS (Community Living Assistance Services and Supports Act) through healthcare reform. The program will assist people living at home instead of moving to an assisted living community so they can keep their independence for a longer amount of time. Angle feels that iRobot’s machines will work with this program and will enrich people’s lives.

Social science has viewed the topic of menopause as a complex subject, and is defined as the end of a woman’s fertility.

However, oftentimes, pharmaceutical companies view the topic from a commercial standpoint, aimed at making a profit. Many brochures are available on the subject and “…claim to be concerned with patient eduction, but are produced by pharmaceutical companies whose aim… is to make vast profits for the pharmaceutical industry.”

These brochures are also often handed out in health care facilities which give them an expertise status, offering a “consultation” and “objective” approach to the topic of menopause.

Most often in these brochures, menopause is shown as a problem and there are solutions to these problems through the pharmaceutical industry. Metaphors and negative terms are used to describe the changes in women’s bodies.

This has a huge impact on its readers, because in western culture, part of a woman’s role in her life is based on her fertility, so the topic has cultural resonance to it. These pharmaceutical companies treat the body as a machine that can be “fixed” with a particular drug or hormone treatment.

The truth is, these studies are extremely broad, only focusing on the negative. They rarely discuss details like the ages of those in the study, the culture of women, or who did the research. They also fail to realize the emotional upset due to the stigma with menopause. In fact, usually these brochures play on that. The degeneration approach defeminizes these readers, playing on fears of old age.

The “solution” to these problems is often given in a matter-of-fact way or common-sense way, “proven” by science and technology.

Everyone changes with age. It’s important to first address stigmas and superficial fears that are tied to social or cultural norms because they affect our thinking process. Age is not a disease.

No matter what age you are, wrinkles can still be prevented and skin can still be protected.

When you are exposed to the sun, UVA penetrates into your skin which promotes premature aging and damages skin cells even before you begin to burn.

Here are four foods and one tip to help your skin look younger:

- Eat strawberries for their vitamin C which helps collagen production. Red bell peppers, papaya, broccoli, and oranges are rich in vitamin C as well.

-Eat tomatoes for the carotenoid lycopene which helps keep your skin smooth.

-Eat tofu and other soy products for their isoflavones to preserve collagen.

-Eat tuna for the Omega-3 fat EPA to preserve collagen.

- Put on as much sunscreen as your dermatologist recommends, not what you think is an acceptable amount.
